Greenville High French students successfully competed at the Fête Française, hosted at Wylie High School by the North Texas chapter of the Association of American Teachers of French.
More than 400 students from 19 Dallas area public and private schools competed in academic and cultural events.
Greenville
High School earned the First Place trophy for the Beginners level in
Skits with their version of “Avocat Pathélin”, an old story from
the Middle Ages about a sly lawyer who helps a dishonest shepherd
escape punishment for butchering the sheep of his master. Players
included Gladys Rodriguez as Pathélin (the lawyer), Noemi Ugalde as
Agnelet (the shepherd), Ana Osornio as Guillaume (the master) and
Angela Winter as Bartholin (the judge).
At the Intermediate level, the Dramatic Skit cast also won the First Place
trophy and ribbons with a five minute adapted scene from Molière’s
L’Avare (the Miser). The three-character scene included Salanna
Short as Harpagon (the miser), Maryland Ramirez as Élise (his daughter)
and Josh McCoy as Cléante (his son). In the scene, the son and
daughter know their father will not allow marriages to their penniless
sweethearts.
Harpagon announces their future spouses will be old but rich, and he himself will marry Cléante’s love.
GHS French teacher Elizabeth Porter praised her students’ enthusiasm and work.
“These
students have the potential, with hard work, to be successful in all
their endeavors,” Porter said. “Learning a new language does
require commitment to practice outside the classroom. I am proud
of their efforts.”
