Lamar teacher earns kudos in KERA contest |
A Greenville elementary teacher’s ability to show math’s relevance to the “real world” has earned her recognition.
Shannon Manley, a third grade teacher at Greenville’s Lamar Elementary, took top honors along with other teachers and students from districts across North Texas in KERA Channel 13’s “Do the Math” competition.
Winners received their awards during a special ceremony at the KERA studios on Thursday, January 10. KERA received more than 300 submissions, which were judged by a jury of educators.
The joint project of KERA’s Educational Resource Center and Travelocity, “Do the Math” invited teachers and students in third through sixth grades to submit math word problems and original activities illustrating how math is used in the real world.
Winners in the teaching category received awards of $500 for first place, $350 for second place and $150 for third place.
Manley’s entrant placed third, behind those of Jean Streepey of Highland Park ISD and Vonda Ore of Granbury ISD.
Manley’s lesson, titled “Compare and Share,” involved students using coins and bills to represent various amounts of money. In the lesson, students compared the amounts and used comparison sentences to discuss their relationship.
Students were also given the opportunity to extend the activity to rounding, estimating and place value concepts.
