“SPARK” follows high school PTA meeting
Greenville High School’s final PTA meeting of the year will include a parent education program aimed at “sparking” student interest in math and science.

The meeting is set for Monday May 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium and includes officer installation.  Immediately following the meeting, the high school and Texas A&M University-Commerce will host the Operation SPARK “Family Math Night.”

As a part of Operation SPARK, a grant funded by L-3 Communications and carried out through A&M-Commerce, Greenville ISD, Commerce ISD, Greenville Christian and Phoenix schools have been able to schedule times with graduate students from the university’s math and science departments to come on campus to conduct investigations with students.

Some of the things that have been done include electroplating (chemistry), wind tunnel experiments (physics) and the math of elections (math).

“The purpose is to spark interest in math and the sciences, which is exactly what this Family Math and Science Night is all about,” said Jerry Bruton, Academic Dean of Math and Science at GHS.  “It’s about stimulating the curiosity of the students in those areas at the same time we showcase the talents and interests of our teachers.”

The event will include an 8 p.m. “Chemistry Circus” to be “performed” by Dr. Stephen Starnes of the TAMU-Commerce Chemistry Department.

Participating teachers will come from each Greenville secondary campus, and targeted students are in grades four through eight.
