Superintendent Launches Innovative Learning Model

Greenville ISD Superintendent Don Jefferies announced the implementation of an innovative learning model at Greenville High School this month. Advanced Academic Teams (AAT) is an instructional arrangement model that will assign students to specified work teams to complete product-oriented lessons and tasks.

The AAT model is based on a cooperative learning format designed to simulate work team models utilized in successful business organizations. According to Jefferies there are several purposes for delivering instruction in this format.

“Cooperative learning is a proven instructional arrangement that facilitates learning and helps students master the standards and content being taught. With this method students will learn how to work in team situations to solve problems and to design and develop products. Students will be taught the social skills necessary to work on an effective learning team and participation will encourage students to become more responsible for their own learning.”

Introducing Advanced Academic Teams at the high school level will better prepare students for college and post-high school work with companies that utilize self-directed work teams, quality teams and other teaming formats to improve their production and market competitiveness.

In recent years, Greenville ISD also initiated Product Oriented Education (POE), a project-based learning approach to curriculum. The education model has resulted in the vertically-aligned robotics program, STEM academy, Solar Car team, Destination Imagination successes and more.

Through these cooperative learning opportunities, Greenville ISD has set the stage for accountability success. In the 2012-2013 school year, Greenville ISD earned the highest designation of “Met Standard” and was awarded six academic distinctions under the Texas Education Agency’s accountability system.
