GHS gains exposure in 2014 Solar Car Challenge

GREENVILLE, TEX.-- Today marks the first day the 2014 Solar Car Challenge where Greenville High School's team, the Iron Lions, will compete in a closed track and cross-country race at Texas Motor Speedway in Dallas/Fort Worth. Last year, GHS took second place overall in the cross-country heat and are looking to take first place this year.

This year there are 131 entries from 28 states, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and Mexico. Each team builds their own solar car from scratch to race in the challenge. The cars are also inspected for safety by the judges.

Monday and Tuesday, July 21st and 22nd, mark the start of the closed track race at Texas Motor Speedway. The cross-country race begins on Wednesday, July 23rd, where teams will race from Texas Motor Speedway to Austin, Tex.

GHS Iron Lions received coverage from Fox News and CBS 11 earlier today where several students were interviewed and given the chance to show off their hard work. For pictures and more updates, check in with the GISD Facebook page and GHS Solar Car page.
