Dr. Mary Jane Vance releases Flashes Forever, a historical account of the Flaming Flashes

Many individuals, past and present, have written about the early history of The Flaming Flashes of Greenville High School.  Their proud heritage of being the first high school precision dance and drill team in the world was initiated when Gussie Nell Davis, a native of Farmersville, Texas, began her first year of teaching physical education at Greenville High School in 1928.  Miss Davis saw the need for activities involving high school girls and created a pep squad which later evolved as a drum and bugle corps.  While there were other high school drum and bugle corps in the early 1930s, The Flaming Flashes were the first to include Dancing and twirling drills.  The rest, as they say, is history. Flashes Forever, written by Dr. Mary J. Vance, a former Flash Director, provides a chronological history covering 1928 through 2015, and is dedicated to Lori Butler, who has served as Flash Director for the past twenty-five years.

All proceeds go to The Flaming Flashes. Paperback copies ($20.00) and hardcover books ($30.00) are currently available by contacting Miss Lori Butler at 903-461-1008 or via email at butlerl@greenvilleisd.com.  Plans are underway to provide copies via Amazon.com, Hastings Books (Greenville), The Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum, and The Hunt Regional Medical Hospital Gift Shop.
