GHS NJROTC Earns Highest Honors During Annual Military Inspection

The Greenville High School NJROTC unit conducted their Annual Military Inspection on Wednesday, March 23. This is an annual requirement for all Junior ROTC commands and represents one of the most important benchmarks of the year. The inspecting officer for the event was Commander Mike Hale, the NJROTC Area Ten manager. In addition to conducting all the inspection phases and awarding the honor platoon streamer, he presented ten awards to cadets for superior uniform appearance and dedication to the unit. Awarded cadets include Anthony Galaviz, Larry Robbins-Ramirez, Regina Sweat, Jordan Frimpter, Gaby Reinboldt, Skyler Benini, Minerva Mendoza, Denise Cuba, Anakin Settle, and Bradley Butcher.

Coming off the heels of the school Spring Break, the Greenville High School NJROTC cadets quickly came back together and proved their mettle by preparing the entire unit for a successful event. Under the leadership of the unit Commander, Cadet Lieutenant Commander Demarcus Terry, the unit performed above expectations and were graded outstanding in most of the evaluated areas. The unit was graded on uniform appearance and academics, platoon drill, and a very impressive Pass-in-Review ceremony. Additionally, all unit supply and facilities, finances, and administrative records were inspected and graded to ensure compliance with district and Navy policies.

The event was well attended by school and district staff, parents, and local community leaders. The ceremonial phase of the event included performances by the armed and unarmed exhibition drill teams that amazed all those present, the color guard, and a Pass-in-Review where all the cadets in the unit were on display for the visitors and the inspecting officer.  On the performance of the cadets, Naval Science Instructor Chief Quandrell Stephens said, “I was amazed at the manner the unit was able to come back from Spring Break and perform so professionally. It is a true tribute to the staff leadership and cadets in the program, and is an excellent representation of the caliber of students we have here at Greenville High School.”

Third Platoon, commanded by Cadet Chief Petty Officer, Bradley Butcher, won the coveted Honor Platoon distinction. The honor was earned by distinctive accomplishments of platoon personnel during the uniform inspection and drill phases of the Annual Military Inspection. Of the distinction, Butcher said, “it was a completely unexpected but welcome tribute to the platoon. All the platoons did very well, and we feel fortunate to have come up on top in the determination of honor platoon.”

Inspecting Officer, Hale, admired the support of Superintendent, Don Jefferies, GHS Principal, Heath Jarvis, the GISD school board, and the parents and community leaders. “The support of the NJROTC program is in large part dependent on the support of the district, administration, and parents, so I am very happy to see so many in attendance today,” he said.

At the end of the day, the NJROTC earned the highest marks possible in all inspection areas.  A total of 29 Bravo Zulu medals awarded for outstanding uniforms and two platoons earned the highest honors.

“They exceeded my expectations.  They all came prepared,” Gonzalez said.  “They knew how to march. They knew their general orders and their chain of command.  They were prepared.”

Referring to Walker’s inspection, Gonzalez said, “He was very proud of the kids. He was very happy to be here. He noted that it’s always a pleasure to come to a unit that prepares for this type of event. He knew they were prepared, so he thoroughly enjoyed it!”
