SGC Band Brings Home 92 Division I Ratings at UIL Solo and Ensemble Competition

On Thursday, March 31st, members of the Sixth Grade Center Band participated in the SGC Solo & Ensemble Festival. Over the last six weeks, students worked outside of class to learn their solos and ensembles in order to prepare for the competition. Students had to prepare their music and rehearse completely independent of administrative help. After preparing their music, the students had to play their solo or ensemble for the judges, where they were given a rating and feedback.

“All of their hard work and preparation has really paid off!” said SGC Band Director, Amy Lawhead. In all, 21 ensembles and 71 solos earned a Division I rating. Five ensembles and 21 solos earned a Division II rating. “I am so proud of how much our young musicians have achieved this year,” said Lawhead, “they have learned and improved so much and I am excited to see them become successful band students in the future” she said.

There are currently 167 sixth grade band members with the numbers growing every year. The success of the sixth grade band, which is the first year students begin band, helps pave the way for future successes as the students advance through the program.
