GISD Names Teacher of the Year Finalists

Ten Greenville ISD teachers have been voted as top teachers and will compete as finalists in the annual Greenville ISD Teacher of the Year competition.

The teachers, one each from the district’s ten campuses, will compete for the 2016 Teacher of the Year prize and the chance to advance to the regional and state Teacher of the Year competition.

Elementary teachers honored were Tina Smith (Bowie), Diana Smith (Carver), Vickie Thomason (L.P. Waters), Lisa Redd (Crockett), Jeanette Allison (Travis) and Courtney Sommers (Lamar Elementary).

Secondary teachers honored were Rebecca Aronow (Greenville Sixth Grade Center), Cheryl Dennis (Greenville Middle School), George Sellers (Greenville High School) and Diane Roman (Houston Education Center).

Don Jefferies, Superintendent, congratulated all the teachers by saying, “To be honored by your peers with a Campus Teacher of the Year designation is the highest compliment. Your service to the students in our district is invaluable and will have a substantial and prolonged impact on students and this community.”

Each fall, the Texas State Teacher of the Year program honors two State Teachers of the Year — one in elementary education and one in secondary education — and Regional Teachers of the Year from each of the 20 Education Service Center regions.

The Texas Teachers of the Year serve as traveling ambassadors for public education as they speak for, motivate, and exemplify the contributions of the teaching profession.

The state program is affiliated with the National Teacher of the Year Program, the oldest and most prestigious awards program to focus public attention on excellence in teaching.
