GISD band members qualify for State UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest

Saturday, February 3rd was a very busy day for band students across the Dallas area. Just over 4,000 students participated in the UIL Region 3 Solo and Ensemble Contest. Because of the number of students who were performing, the contest had to be split between 2 sites (North Garland HS, and Mesquite HS). GHS band students performanced at North Garland HS.

Greenville entered 33 events ranging from flute solos to brass ensembles to percussion ensembles. 31 of our events received 1st division (SUPERIOR) medals, and the remaining 2 events received 2nd division (EXCELLENT) ratings. In addition to these outstanding results, 40 individual students, participating in 14 events, have qualified to the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Austin in May (Memorial Day). To qualify for State, students must play a Class I solo/ensemble (solos have to be memorized).

"Students and Directors put a lot of work into this competition. Because of the individual responsibilities for each performing group/solo, there has to be a lot of care put into the music," said Director of Bands Joel L. Weisberg.“ Our young musicians had a SPECTACULAR day! To have 1/3 of our total band qualify for a State competition is an amazing tribute to our hard-working students – GO LIONS!!!”
