Design Friday
On Design Fridays, in the advanced engineering classes, Ms. Emerson gives her students challenges.
This week, the students broke into teams of 3 or 4 students. Each team was given a glue gun and 50 popcycle sticks to build a bridge that would span the distance between the two totes and could hold the weight of their engineering books.
Challenge on!
They first had to draw the design, based on engineering principles and give them to Ms. Emerson for her approval. Then they had to begin the construction of the bridge. The timer was going to complete the construction before the deadline.
They started with one book, and as the bridge would hold the weight, more books would be added.
It was amazing to watch these bridges hold 5-6 books. The one that most students thought would not work, proved to hold the most. The students cheered for each other with each book added.
This is what engineering at Greenville High School is all about - teamwork, creativity, design, research, development, production and testing.
Hats off to Ms. Emerson for facilitating a class in which students thrive!
