GISD Health Services conducts state mandated health screenings as noted below:
Vision and Hearing Screening :
All pre k within 45 days of beginning of current school year
K, 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th graders within first semester
Any new students regardless of grade level within 120 days of enrollment
Spinal Screening: GISD usually conducts spinal screening in Nov/Dec
Girls in 5th and 7th grade
Boys in 8th grade
Risk Assessment for Type ll Diabetes (Acanthosis Nigricans marker)
This screening is done at the same time as vision and hearing and involves examining the back of the neck for a dark velvety discoloration.
If the AN marker is present the nurse will also measure BMI( body mass index includes ht and wt) and Blood pressure.
Parents/Guardians will be notifed by letter of any abnormal screening results.
