Bilingual and ESL Programs

GISD’s Bilingual and ESL programs support Emergent Bilingual Students through a variety of instructional models both at the elementary and secondary levels.

The department aims to help all students become fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English while valuing their language, academic, and cultural backgrounds as part of a diverse community.

  • Greenville ISD abides by Chapter 89 by disclosing the Two-Way Dual Language Immersion program the candidate selection criteria and access to the program are not based on race, creed, color, religious affiliation, age, or disability.  Furthermore, identified Emergent Bilingual students shall not be restricted access to the Two-Way Dual Language Immersion program based on any linguistic or academic achievement measure in the program’s partner language or English.
  • Greenville ISD follows Chapter 89 by clearly stating the selection criteria for the Two-Way Dual Language Immersion program. The selection process will be included in our program flyers and during informational meetings which will highlight program goals and expectations.
  • For more information or to see if your child is a candidate for the Two-Way Dual Language Immersion program, please check district communications for upcoming parent informational meetings.
  • Our district language allocation policy is:
  1. Pre-Kindergarten through First Grade: 90% instruction in the primary language and 10% in the second language.
  2. Second Grade through Fifth Grade: 50% instruction in the primary language and 50% in the second language.
  • Parents or guardians of identified Emergent Bilingual students who do not choose the One-Way or Two-Way Dual Language Immersion program will receive services through the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at their corresponding school.

ESL Programs

Texas school districts must offer English as a Second Language (ESL) programs if they have one or more students identified as English Learners. Greenville Independent School District currently provides ESL programs and support for students from Pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade.

ESL is an intensive program designed to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. Instruction is given in English and follows the Texas Essential Knowledge Standards (TEKS) and the English Language Proficiency Skills (ELPS) to build English skills and promote academic success across all subjects.

All classroom teachers must use the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) along with the Texas Essential Knowledge Standards (TEKS) in their daily instruction for English Learners, as required by Chapter 74 of the Texas Administrative Code.

Bilingual Dual Language Program

The bilingual dual-language program is available to students identified as English Learners from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. This bilingual program uses students' first language to teach academic content based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in the primary grades, while gradually developing their proficiency in both English and Spanish through specific strategies and methods.

Greenville Independent School District uses one-way and two-way models to meet the linguistic and academic needs of Emergent Bilingual students and Non-Emergent Bilingual students acquiring a second language.
