Student Support Services
The Student Support Services team at Greenville ISD is dedicated to meeting the distinct educational needs of students experiencing homelessness and those in foster care. We work closely with students, families, schools, placement agencies, and other community partners to provide comprehensive support.
In alignment with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, our department offers crucial assistance to students and families facing housing instability. Our goal is to ensure these students have access to a wide range of educational, social, and enrichment opportunities that foster their academic success and personal growth.
Understanding McKinney-Vento
The McKinney-Vento Act defines homeless children and youth as those who do not have a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This broad definition encompasses various situations, including but not limited to:
- Sharing housing due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar circumstances.
- Residing in hotels, motels, trailer parks, or campgrounds because they have no other adequate housing options.
- Living in emergency or transitional shelters.
- Being abandoned in hospitals.
- Staying in public or private places not intended for regular sleeping accommodations.
- Residing in vehicles, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or other similar places.
- Migratory children living in the aforementioned conditions.
