Voluntary Student Insurance

Under Texas law, students and their parents/guardians are responsible for the cost of their medical care if injured on school property or while participating in school-sponsored events. In accordance with the Texas Tort Claims Act 101.021 and 101.051, please be reminded that public schools such as Greenville ISD cannot legally be responsible for costs of treating student injuries or assume liability for any other costs associated with an injury at school or any school related function unless the personal injury was caused by a district employee's negligent operation of a motor vehicle while performing district duties.

As allowed by law, for students (Grades 7 – 12) who participate in school-sponsored UIL sports and activities and Career and Technical Education activities, Greenville ISD purchases an insurance policy through Health Special Risk, Inc., that provides limited coverage for injuries that occur while participating in those activities. If a student is injured while participating in a school-sponsored UIL activity a claim form will be completed by the Athletic Trainer and given to the student’s parent or guardian. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to complete their portion of the claim form and follow directions on how to submit the form to the insurance company.

Greenville ISD is pleased to offer voluntary student accident insurance for your child through Health Special Risk, Inc. and underwritten by Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company. There are multiple options available, including 24-hour coverage, at-school coverage, and football coverage. Voluntary student accident insurance is paid for by parents on behalf of their child.

Along with the supplemental district sponsored coverage for UIL sports and activities, Greenville ISD also offers an opportunity for all parents/guardians (PK-12) to purchase VOLUNTARY student accident insurance at a low cost through Health Special Risk, Inc.
