Inclement Weather Procedures
The safety of our students and staff is Greenville ISD’s highest priority. In the event of severe or inclement weather, the district follows a comprehensive decision-making process to assess conditions and determine the safest course of action. Factors such as road conditions, weather forecasts, and the operational status of our facilities are carefully evaluated to decide whether to delay school start times, release students early, or cancel the school day altogether. Our commitment is to communicate these decisions promptly and effectively, ensuring that our school community remains informed and prepared.
Current Weather Conditions
Procedures for Delaying or Canceling School
The possibility of severe or inclement weather may result in the delay of school start times, early release from school, or cancellation of the school day. When there is cause for concern, the Operations Department will monitor weather conditions and inform the Superintendent of the possibility of severe weather.
The Superintendent will determine the need for a meeting to consider school operations for the day. The meeting and/or remote discussion will take place no later than 5:00 a.m., if needed.
The following individuals will advise the Superintendent in the event of severe weather:
- Assistant Superintendent of Operations
- Chief of Police
The Superintendent will make the decision to delay or cancel school for the day by 5:30 a.m. or sooner.
If a delay or cancellation is called for, the Inclement Weather Communication Plan flowchart will be followed (see attached flowchart).
Decision Process to Close or Delay School Opening
Greenville ISD takes the following information into consideration when determining to keep schools open, close schools, or delay start times:
- Consultation with local emergency management authorities
- Road condition information from transportation staff and local law enforcement
- Amount of snow and ice accumulated
- Building conditions (Do facilities have electricity and heat?)
- Parking lot and sidewalk conditions
- Temperature and wind chill
- Weather forecasts
