Greenville ISD is excited to announce the new Principal of Bowie Elementary for the 2025–2026 school year: Ms. Kortney Melton!

Kortney Melton brings over 18 years of experience in education to her role as Principal of Bowie Elementary School. A passionate advocate for student success and equitable learning, Kortney began her career as a bilingual teacher, working with students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Her early classroom experience laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to meeting the needs of diverse learners.

Throughout her career, Kortney has served in multiple leadership roles, including Bilingual/ESL Coordinator for Wills Point ISD and Bilingual/ESL Director for North Lamar ISD. In 2019, she joined Greenville ISD, where she served as Assistant Principal and Hunt County Head Start Education Coordinator at LP Waters Early Childhood Learning Center. She also held the role of Assistant Director of Human Resources for the district, gaining valuable experience in staff development and district operations.

Driven by her passion for working directly with students and teachers, she returned to campus leadership as Assistant Principal at Bowie Elementary, a role she held for three years before stepping into the position of Principal.

Kortney holds a Bachelor’s degree in Bilingual Elementary Education, as well as two Master’s degrees—one in Curriculum and Instruction and the other in Educational Administration. Her educational background, paired with her leadership experience, equips her to guide Bowie Elementary with vision, empathy, and a strong focus on student achievement.

Known affectionately by many of her students and their parents as “Mama Melton”, Mrs. Melton takes joy and pride in knowing that her students feel loved and cared for by her.
“My wish is that every one of my students knows that I love them every single day. One of the biggest blessings is having my sweet students run up and give me a hug, fist bump or high five. I always tell parents that when your children are at Bowie Elementary, they are my children, and I will love them as such.”

In April of 2025, Mrs. Melton was honored by her peers as Greenville ISD’s Leading Lion of the Year, recognizing her outstanding leadership, dedication, and impact on her school community.

Mrs. Melton takes great pride in the fact that Bowie Elementary is more than a school—it’s a family.
“We celebrate each other’s successes and lift one another up when we’re down. We work hard and love hard. We are successful because we are all in this together.”

She is deeply committed to continuing the school’s warm, familial atmosphere where both students and staff feel loved, supported, challenged, and inspired to grow.

When not working alongside students and staff, Mrs. Melton enjoys spending time with her two teenage sons and her husband. They are very active within their church, youth sports and the great outdoors.
