GHS Takes First in German Competition

 Greenville High School German students competed successfully at the Texas State German Contest held in Austin Saturday, February 23.

The Oompah Band finished 1st in the competition. This band plays German band music. The band members a...re: David Aly, Clay Evans, Preston Evans, Benjamin Fawcett, Phillip Malone, Daniel Rios (director), John Shasteen, Mason Smith, Annie Steward, Ricky Steward, and Andrew Walker.

The Folk Dance team finished 2nd. The team competes with a dance program of 5 authentic German folk dances. The members of this year’s team are: Benjamin Fawcett, Elizabeth Hill, Victoria Hosking (Tanzmeisterin), Seska Jordan, Phillip Malone, Jonathan McClellen, Katie McMurray, Landon Moser, Christina Ory, Kaci Porter, Mason Smith, Annie Steward, Ricky Steward, and John Wensel.

The German Level 3 Skit finished 6th in the competition. They performed “Rumpelstilzchen.” The cast members are: Avery Arnold, Preston Evans, Benjamin Fawcett, Katie McMurray, Landon Moser, Ethan Paul, and Sabre Tweedy.

Students qualified for the State contest by placing in the top five at Winterfest February 2. This is the North Texas region, one of the three regional contests held for German students. The regional contests are held simultaneously on the first Saturday in February in Carrolton (Winterfest), San Antonio (Sprachfest), and Houston (Houstonfest). With the State contest held the last Saturday of February.

Winterfest began in the late 1960’s followed by Sprachfest in 1976 and Houstonfest in 1980. In 1982 the first Texas State German Contest was held at Crockett High School in Austin. The contest was then held at UT Austin from 1984-1995, when it moved to Baylor University until 2004. In 2005 the contest moved back to UT Austin where it is sponsored by the University of Texas.

At this year’s competition there were 1018 students registered in 1073 entries of 82 events, representing 65 Texas schools currently teaching German.
