GMS One-Act Secures Second Place

Greenville Middle School One Act Play competition was held in Wylie, TX on March 7, 2013. Greenville students came home with Second Place for all around performance and several medals for Outstanding Tech, All-Star Cast, and Honorable Mention for a performance worth noticing.

Among the cast and crew were; Kaden Denuyl (All-star cast), Laura Foote, Maddie Burns (Honorable mention), Jacob Hunnicutt, Jacques Hawkins (All- star cast), Jace Kilmer, David Foote (Outstanding tech), Kennedi Wilson, Lindsey Hamilton, Rachel Aly, and Shelby Kelsey.

The cast performed a deep and insightful play about TJ Toeffler, a teenage boy, and his journey through the tragedy of a family breaking apart and a mother deserting him. Denuyl excellently executed the portrayal of a teenager trying to seem normal while fighting the ache of feeling alone and realizing “life is painful”. Mother (Foote), father (Hunnicutt), son (Denuyl) and sister (Burns) create a realistic look at a seemingly tight-knit family. We soon see that same family go from a nucleus to nuclear as mother leaves and the family implodes.

The show provides hope that TJ will find a confidant to share his pain. Hawkins and Denuyl have excellent chemistry in their portrayal of best friends and leave the audience laughing in spite of such serious and heavy subject matter, and Kilmer gave a heartbreaking performance as the girlfriend who just can’t handle the realities of TJ’s pain.

The show’s director, Miss Hilbrand, states that “It’s a privilege to work with a cast of such dedicated and mature students. The honor is all theirs; I couldn’t be more proud of their performance and who they’ve become through this experience.” Assistant Director and UIL Coordinator, Sarah Ege, adds; “I am so proud of the One Act Play cast and crew. Their hard work and dedication paid off on Thursday. It was an honor to work with such a wonderful group of kids and watch them grow into terrific actors and actresses.” Principal, Mr. Gish also added “There was a lot of time and dedication and we are very pleased with the results of their efforts”.
