GHS German Students Earn Hot Results at Winterfest

Greenville High School German students competed at the Winterfest Regional German Contest held at R.L. Turner High School on Saturday. GISD was one of thirty schools represented at the competition.

GHS students performed well securing 3rdplace Cultural Sweepstakes and 8thplace Overall Sweepstakes in the small
school division.


The GHS Oompah band, under the tutelage of Director of Bands Joel Weisberg, placed 2nd. Members of the band are Benjamin Fawcett, John Shasteen, Preston Evans, Laura Foote, Phillip Malone, William Powell, Ricky Steward, Annie Steward, Mason Smith, Alex Mendez, and Andrew Walker.

The GHS Folkdance team placed 3rd. Participating members of the team were Benjamin Fawcett, Kaci Porter, Kolton Evans, Miranda Ferrer, Elizabeth Hill, Seska Jordan, Phillip Malone, Jonathan McClellen, Christina Ory, Mason Smith,
Annie Steward, Ricky Steward, and John Wensel.
 

Alyssa Ruprecht and Anna Morgan placed 2ndwith their research paper which showed a Texas-German connection. They focused on Greenville resident Gabi McGary, a longtime supporter of Greenville German students.

Additionally, Andrew Walker placed 1st in Level 2 Memorized Poetry with “Der Werewolf,” Laura Foote placed 1st in Level 1 Memorized Poetry with “­­­Erlkoenig,” And David Foote placed 2nd in Level 1 Memorized Poetry with “Der Panther.”

There were three regional competitions held this weekend. Winterfest is held in Carrollton, Sprachfest is held in San
Antonio, and Houstonfest is held in Houston. The top five finishers in each event at each of the three regional competitions qualified for the Texas State German Contest to be held February 22 at the University of Texas in Austin.
