GMS and GHS VEX Robotics Teams

Win 3 Awards at

The U. S. Open Robotics Championship

Four teams from the Greenville Middle School, the “Gig-a-bots,” and one team from Greenville High School, the “Iron Cowboys,” competed in the CREATE U. S. Open Robotics Championship last weekend in Omaha, Nebraska.

Greenville Middle School “Gig-a-bots”

The Greenville Middle School entered four robots into the competition. Team 2148B won two trophies. The first was for being the “1 v 1” Competition finalist.

In the Championship, they finished the Qualification Rounds in 3rd place and formed an alliance with the “Robot Blasters” from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and the “Unpossibles” from Elkhorn, Nebraska. This alliance went undefeated until the finals and lost an exciting “winner take all” third match for the championship. They completed the tournament as the Tournament Finalist. For this, they earned their second trophy. Team members attending are: Trenton Burns, Xachary Aguilar, Xayne Aguilar and Ethan McGee

Team 2148F finished the Qualification Rounds in 10th place and reached the Elimination Round. They completed the tournament in the Quarterfinals. They earned a trophy for the “Think” award. This was one of only two technical awards given. The “Think” award is presented to a team that has successfully utilized autonomous programming modes during competition. Quality, consistency and success of autonomous programs in being an integral part of an effective strategy as well as the ability of the students to explain their programming process from strategy to syntax will help to determine a winner of this award. Team members are: Alexandrea Bahm, Eleanor Hill, Katie Tolly, Lydia Shatney and Alysia Martinez.

Team 2148 finished the Qualification Rounds in 11th place and also reached the Elimination Round. They completed the tournament in the Quarterfinals. Team members are: Isiah Dean, Xavier Dean, Corey Hargraves, Nicholas Haslett and Carlos Riveroll.

Team 2148K finished the Qualification Rounds in 8th place and reached the Elimination Round. They completed the tournament in the Quarterfinals. Team members are: Garrett Packer, Joshua Ross, Kacie Weeks, Tessa Mitchell and Edgar Ramirez.

Gig-a-bot Coach Orion Casper said "The Gig-A-Bots did extremely well during the tournament. I am so proud of how hard they worked. To get to the level they needed to be at, to go to Omaha, and perform the way they did is amazing. They have had an awesome season this year and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Gig-A-bots."

The GMS Gig-a-bots are in their third year of competition. This year the 10 Gig-a-bots teams earned 20 individual trophies for robot play and technical achievement in local and national tournaments. This is more than the total trophies earned the prior two years combined.

Greenville High School “Iron Cowboys”

The Iron Cowboys, Team 4148B, finished the Qualification Rounds in 1st place. They formed an alliance with the “Durpy Drooling Zebras” from Kaysville, Utah and the “Combustable Lemons” from Omaha, Nebraska. They completed the tournament in the Quarterfinals. Team members are: Christopher Dennis, Adriana Tucker and Tyler Behrens.

“I am extremely proud of Team 4148B. Chris, Adrianna, and Tyler have all worked very hard this school year and I'm glad they got to show their stuff on the big stage at the US Open.” says Iron Cowboys Coach Adrienne Emerson, “Ranking number 1 in a field that is that practiced and that deep is no easy feat. Their robot, team performance, and hard work have impressed teams from all across the country this year. This was a great end to an excellent season. I am looking forward to see what the VEX program can do next year!”

All of the Greenville ISD robots entered in the championship reached the Elimination Round and; therefore, received the opportunity to compete for the tournament championship.
