SGC Robotics to Attend the VEX World Championship

Sixth Grade Students Attending the 2014 VEX World Championship

Five robot builders from the Greenville Sixth Grade Center will be attending the 2014 VEX Robotics World Championship - VEX IQ Division in Anaheim, California starting Thursday April 24th. Team 3148A, the TEX-Mex Dragons, composed of members Zachary Foster, Hendrix Herron, Austin Jackson, Landon, Koger and Alexander Portillo have been improving their robot since they received their invitation on March 21st.

Students participating in The VEX IQ Challenge form teams to solve exciting robot game challenges by driving a robot using a controller and pre-programming it using computer software. Teams work together to score points in Teamwork Matches and also show off their skills in individual Skills Challenges. The “Tex-Mex Dragons” have built a robot to play this years’ challenge game, “Add It Up.”   The object of the game is to attain the highest possible Alliance Score by Scoring your Small and Large Bucky-Balls into the Floor, Low and High Goals, filling Scoring Rings, and having robots hang from the Hanging Bar at the end of the Match.

They have also completed a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) research project, “Robot Kinematics,” which explains how a robot moves in all directions. They will present their project to a judging panel in Anaheim. At this time, they will also discuss math formulas that can be used when designing and competing their robot.

Greenville Sixth Grade Center Coach James Hardaway says “I am so excited about this opportunity for our team to compete in the world competition.  I could not be more proud of the kids for all of their hard work throughout the year.  This is such a great opportunity for the kids.”
