GMS and GHS VEX Robotics Crowned Tournament Champions and are State Bound

Greenville TEX.--The Greenville High School VEX Robotics Team, the Iron Cowboys, and Greenville Middle School VEX Robotics Team, the Gigabots, competed in the Greenville High School and Middle School Skyrise Tournaments in the Greenville High School Gym this past Saturday.

Three GHS and all GMS Teams made it to the Elimination Rounds of their respective tournament. Six of the top ten Middle School qualification places went to the Gigabots.

GMS Team 2148D, whose members are Noah Stone, Faith Clayton, Corbin Hudgins, Landon Koger, and Brady Diggs finished the Qualification Rounds in first place. They selected Team 2148A, whose members are Jordan Frimpter, Trenton Burns, Austin Burns, Tessa Mitchell, and Yoensoo Jung and Team 2148C whose members include Pierce Thurmond, Javier Littlefield, Ethan McGee, and Brett Ozarowski, to form the first seeded alliance. This all Gigabot alliance went on to become Middle School Division Tournament Champions. Team 2148A finished the qualification rounds in ninth place while Team 2148C finished the qualification rounds in sixteenth place.

GMS Gigabots Coach, Orion Casper, remarked that “It always feels good to have your best tournament of the year at home and that is what the students did. Six teams placed out of the qualification rounds in the top 10 and, for the first time in program history, we were able to put together an alliance of all Gigabots and win the tournament. I am so proud of all of their efforts.”

GHS Team 4148B, whose members are Ryan Garland, Raymond McClure, Ryan Bakkum, Corey Hargraves, Xavier Dean and Nicolas Hazlett, formed the number five alliance with teams from Ladonia and Quinlan, taking out the number four, number two, and number one ranked teams to become High School Division Tournament Champions. GHS Iron Cowboys Coach, Colin Nobles said that the team “made a big upset win against the number one alliance, and showed the competition that this year’s game really comes down to having a solid alliance that can collaborate on building a skyrise.”

In addition, team 4148E, whose members are Martin Castillo, Shea Garland, Lydia Shatney, Katie Tolly, Jess Bousquet and John Calderon, ranked number eight at the tournament and selected their teammates 4148H, whose members are Dan Price, Dan Constancia, Denise Cuba, Matt Mccallum, Hector Pineda, Kyle Hrinrich, Isaiah Champion, Nicholas Torres, to work with them in the eliminations. The team made it to the Quarterfinals.

“This year was the 3rd annual Greenville High School VEX Regional, with the most teams we have ever had participate,” said GHS Coach, Adrienne Emerson, “This event is very special because not only is it in Greenville but it is 100% planned, set-up, and ran by the high school Robowranglers robotics team. These kids work incredibly hard to pull off this event, and it is thought to be the best run event in North Texas by many many teams,” she said.

GMS Team 2148D, 2148A and 2148C along with GHS Team 4148B have qualified for the North Texas Regional Tournament in Greenville on February 21st. The North Texas Regional is a tournament that will qualify teams for the VEX World Championship in Louisville, KY next April.

GMS Team 2148D also won the “Innovate Award” which is presented to the team that has the most “Innovative” single design feature on their robot. GMS Team 2148B whose members are Alex Bahm, Alysia Martinez, Joshua Ross, and Francisa Gutierrez won the “Think Award” which is given to the team with an impressive and effective autonomous programming mode. Team 2148B completed the qualification rounds in seventh place and formed the number six alliance and ended the tournament in the quarterfinals.

GMS Team 2148A was the Middle School Programming Skills Champion and are ranked 10th in the world. GHS Team 4148B was also the High School Division Programming Skills Champion and are ranked 19th in the world.

GHS Teams Competing and Earning Places in the Elimination Rounds are:

4148E – Whose members are Martin Castillo, Jahlyl Cross, Shea Garland, Lydia Shatney, Katie Tolly, Jessica Bousquet and John Calderon.

4148H – Whose members are Dan Price, Dan Constancia, Denise Cuba, Matt McCallum, Kyle Herinrich, Isiah Champion and Nicolas Torres.

These two teams along with a team from McKinney formed the eighth alliance. They concluded the tournament in the semifinals.

GMS Teams Competing and Earning Places in the Elimination Rounds are:

2148E - Dallas Davies, Nick Stromberg, Kian Smith, and Heavan Phillips. They concluded the qualification rounds in fifth place. They formed the number four alliance. They ended the tournament in the semifinals.

2148F - Romeo Gomez, Henri  Haxiaj, Ethan Winters, and Rodey Wiggins. The finished the qualification rounds in twenty-first  place. They joined the number three alliance which concluded the tournament in the semifinals.

2148G - Hannah Cowgill, Kamden Priest, Kylie Locke, Reese Tubbs, and Wyatt Spivey . They finished the qualification rounds in thirteenth place. They joined the number eight alliance and ended the tournament in the semifinals.

2148H - Kacie Weeks, Addey Carroll, Luis Ugalde, and Zach Foster. They concluded the qualification rounds in sixth place. They formed the number five  alliance which finished the tournament in the semifinals.

2148J – Alex Portillo, Brandon Leblanc, Nick Russell and Joshua Allen. They ended the qualification rounds in eighth place.  They formed the number seven alliance and concluded the tournament in the semifinals.

The next competition for the GMS “Gigabots” will be next Saturday, December 13th, at the Rockwall VEX Skyrise Middle School Tournament in Heath. The GHS “Iron Cowboys” will be in the McKinney VEX High School Tournament in McKinney, also next Saturday.
