GMS Robotics Take Home Double-Whammy, 6GC Qualify for State

The Greenville Middle VEX Robotics Team, the Gigabots, and the Sixth Grade Center VEX IQ Robotics Team, the Cyborgs, both entered two tournaments last Saturday in Rockwall and in Tyler. The Greenville High School VEX Robotics Team, the Iron Cowboys, also entered the tournament in Rockwall.

Greenville Middle School

Three teams competed in the East Texas VEX Skyrise Qualifying Tournament in Tyler. All teams finished the Qualifying Rounds in the top six and competed in the Elimination Rounds.

Gigabots Team 2148A (Jordan Frimpter, Trenton Burns, Austin Burns, Tessa Mitchell, and Yoensoo Jung) partnered with Team 1366 from the Richardson Berker STEM Academy to become Tournament Champions. This is the fourth Tournament Championship for Team 2148A. They also earned the Design Award, which is presented to a team that demonstrates an organized and professional approach to the design process, project and time management and team organization.

Team 2148C, whose members are Pierce Thurmond, Javier Littlefield, Ethan McGee, and Brett Ozarowski, finished the qualification rounds in fifth place and joined the third seeded alliance. They finished the tournament in second place losing in the final round.

Team 2148D, whose members are Faith Clayton, Corbin Hudgins, Jacob Koger, and Brady Diggs, finished the qualification rounds in sixth place. They formed the fourth seeded alliance and completed the tournament in the quarterfinals.

Six teams other Gigabots teams competed in the Utley Skyrise Tournament in Rockwall. Team 2148G (Hannah Cowgill, Kamden Priest, Kylie Locke, Reese Tubbs, and Wyatt Spivey) were selected by the first seeded Alliance made up of Team 4000 and Team 4000X the Omni Eagles of Heritage Academy to win the tournament.

Team 2148E, whose members are Dallas Davies, Nick Stromberg, Kian Smith, Cheyenne Sailing, and Heaven Phillips, finished the Qualification Rounds in second place. They lead their alliance and selected 3310B Roman Robots from Rockwall-Heath and Cumby Robotics to form the second seeded alliance. They were eventually eliminated by the first seeded in the Finals. They finished the tournament in second place.

Team 2148B, whose members are Alex Bahm, Alysia Matinez, Joshua Ross, Daniel Ugalde, and Francisa Gutierrez, lead the sixth seeded alliance. They were eliminated in the quarter finals.

Team 2148J, whose members are Alex Portillo, Brandon Leblanc, Nic Russell and Joshua Allen, aligned with 2148H, comprised of Kacie Weeks, Addey Carroll, Luis Ugalde, Dulce Romero and Zach Foster, to form the eighth seeded alliance. They were eliminated in the quarter finals.

Team 2148F, whose members are Romeo Gomez, Ethan Winters, Neil Smith and Rodey Wiggins, lead the sixth seeded alliance. They were eliminated in the quarter finals.

All GMS teams went on to the elimination rounds at both tournaments. Gigabots Coach, Orion Casper, said “A little history was made on Saturday by us going to two tournaments and winning both. I am truly amazed by what my teams are doing at each tournament. I would also like to thank our friends Berkner Robotics and the Omni Eagles for joining with us to create two truly unstoppable alliances.”

Sixth Grade Center

Three teams from the Greenville Sixth Grade Center competed in the Utley Highrise Tournament in Rockwall. Team 3148S, whose members are Elijah Wofford, Samuel Martin, Corbin Row, Johnathan Hernandez and Jacob Linden, finished the Teamwork Qualification Rounds in third place. They formed the second seeded alliance with Ouida Springer Elementary in Rockwall. They won the tournament and have now qualified for the North Texas VEX IQ Regional in Greenville on February 28, 2015.

Team 3148C, whose members are Clay Gibson, Gerardo Olivas, Giancarlos Belteton, Johnathan Frimpter and Matthew McFarland, finished the Teamwork Qualification Rounds in fifth place and formed the third seeded alliance.

Team 3148A, whose members are Josue Adame, Thomas Mattson, McKenna Smith and Alexis Rosales, finished the Teamwork Qualification Rounds in 7th place and formed the fourth seeded alliance.

Seven other teams entered the East Texas VEX IQ Highrise Tournament in Tyler. Team 3148H, comprised of Alyssa Mitchell, Brandon Moore, Brittany Morales and Imani Tednga, won the Design Award, which is presented to a team that demonstrates an organized and professional approach to the design process, project and time management and team organization. They partnered with Team 3148J, whose members are Eric Osornio, Joe Osornio, Cristian Portillo and Jonathan Garcia, to form the third place finals alliance.

Team 3148F, whose members are Mariah Rios, Garrett Phillips, Eric Anderson, Sistinas Stretch and Johnathan Hernandez,  joined with Team 3148G, comprised of Preston Tarrant, Rylee Powell, Logan Bright, Marcelo Mendoza and Daniel Loredo, to form the second place finals alliance.

Team 3148D, whose members are Landon Fry, Areli Ramirez, Vanessa Ortega, Zulema Velazquez and Bryan Perez,  joined with Team 3148B, whose members are Jayce Dickeson, Joshua Luna, Jovani Rodriguez, Aranth Ramirez and KD Anderson, to form the fourth place finals alliance.

Greenville High School

GHS teams 4148BN and 4148E had a great weekend in at the Rockwall tournament. 4148B(Ryan Garland, Raymond McClure, Ryan Bakkum, Corey Hargraves, Xavier Dean and Nicolas Hazlett) captured the 6th alliance and fought hard into the semifinals but tipped over with 30 seconds left in the match. Team 4148E, whose members are Martin Castillo, Shea Garland, Lydia Shatney, Katie Tolly, Jessica Bousquet and John Calderon, were picked by the seventh seed, but, they lost to their sister team, Team 4148B, in the quarter finals.
