GISD to Move Temporary Bowie Site

The bond proposition to construct a new Bowie Elementary School, install campus security and technology district-wide, build a new Career and Technology Center, and renovate existing facilities was passed by voters in 2014. Due to construction of the new Bowie Elementary School, a temporary site for the 2015-2016 school year is required.

Two public forums were held to discuss the Bowie Elementary project, related community impact and temporary plans. After gathering community feedback and conducting feasibility and traffic studies, it was determined by administration that the old TxDot property off Highway 69 is not ideal. Poor traffic flow, inconvenient pick-up and drop-off access, and a lack of nearby emergency shelters contributed to the decision to eliminate this property from consideration.

Several new temporary locations are now being considered. Of those discussed, a plot of land west of Greenville High School currently appears most feasible and convenient. The location offers easy access to Monty Stratton, close proximity to shelter, and logical traffic routing. A decision regarding the temporary location will be made in the next couple of weeks.

Those with questions about the temporary location may contact Kelli Tharp, Chief Communications and Business Development Officer, at 903.408.4483 or tharpk@greenvilleisd.com.
