Weather Delays to Bowie Construction

The bond proposition to construct a new Bowie Elementary School, as well as renovations to existing facilities, updates to campus security, technology district-wide, and new space for Career and Technical programs was passed by voters on May 10, 2014. Abatement and demolition to the existing Bowie Elementary began immediately after the end of the 2014-2015 school year completed. A construction schedule was presented by the district’s architects and contractors to the GISD Board of Trustees and GISD administration to show a completion date of August, 2016. The construction schedule included 15 number of “weather days” as determined by the average amount of rain received in this area for the past several years.

To date, the Bowie Elementary construction project has received 63 weather events, more than four times the amount expected and allotted for within the schedule. The architects and contractors are working feverishly and overtime to make-up for the unaccounted weather days, however, the completion date might require adjustment. The current schedule shows completion for October 6th pending no additional weather events. Bowie students and staff will remain at the temporary site until the new campus is finished. As soon as the new campus is completed, students and staff will move to the new facility.

Completed construction will feature a new, energy-efficient, 61,350 square foot facility. The existing K-1 wing originally constructed in 2002 will remain and be incorporated into the new structure. The elementary school will house classrooms for grades K through 5, a music room, computer lab, media center and capabilities to support current and future technology. The new school will also benefit from a controlled entry vestibule with card reader access system for added campus security and new on-site parking and student pick-up and drop-off drives.
