Ten Greenville ISD teachers were selected as top teachers for their campus and to compete as finalists in the annual Greenville ISD Teacher of the Year competition.

The teachers, one each from the district’s ten campuses, will compete for the 2017-18 Teacher of the Year prize and the chance to advance to the regional and state Teacher of the Year competition. 

Elementary teachers honored were Amanda Day (L.P. Waters), Layne Russell (Bowie), Marcos Hernandez (Carver), Rusty Morris (Crockett), Sarah Hood (Lamar), and Cathy Garner (Travis).

Secondary teachers honored were Dina Claude (Greenville Sixth Grade Center), Kim Price (Greenville Middle School), Kristi Thompson (Greenville High School) and Jeff Crossley (Houston Education Center).

This year’s District Teachers of the Year were chosen last week to represent Greenville ISD in the Region 8 Teacher of the Year contest, held in June. This year’s Elementary Teacher of the Year is Marcos Hernandez from Carver Elementary. This year’s Secondary Teacher of the Year is Jeff Crossley from Houston Education Center. Each District Teacher of The Year received an honorary lunch at their campus provided by RibCrib.

Each fall, the Texas State Teacher of the Year program honors two State Teachers of the Year — one in elementary education and one in secondary education — and Regional Teachers of the Year from each of the 20 Education Service Center regions.

The Texas Teachers of the Year serve as traveling ambassadors for public education as they speak for, motivate, and exemplify the contributions of the teaching profession. The state program is affiliated with the National Teacher of the Year Program, the oldest and most prestigious awards program to focus public attention on excellence in teaching.
