Robotics teams shine @ tournaments

Greenville students took top honors in two tournaments that were held Dec. 2. Here are the details:

 

  • GMS’s VEX IQ Protobot team 5148C won the Excellence Award and the Teamwork Champion Award and have qualified for the North Texas VEX IQ Middle School Championship and the CREATE U.S. Open Championship-VEX IQ Middle School Division.
  • GMS also entered eight teams in the Greenville VEX In the Zone Middle School Tournament. The Gigabots 2148 did well with all eight teams participating in playoffs. Team 2148B, whose members are Caden Bowers, Travis Bowers, Arturo Villegas, and Brian Ward, joined Team 2148C consisting of Angel Gonzalez, Jared Pastor-Parra, Andy Shields, and Daniel Wofford, and Team 23310A, the Metal Mustangs from Cain Middle School in Rockwall to form the Number Three Alliance. They finished the tournament in second place.
  • Team 2148D, Jason Linden, Joaquin Littlefield, Diego Martinez, and Nicholas Smith won the Build Award, which is given to a team that builds a sturdy, well-crafted robot.
  • The Katherine G. Johnson STEM Academy Rock-A-Bots 148 entered three teams, the Sixth Grade Center Cyborgs 3148 entered eight teams and Greenville Middle School Protobots 5148 entered four teams in the Harmony Science VEX IQ Tournament in Garland.
  • Three GMS teams advanced to the playoffs. Protobot Team 5148C, whose members are Aiden Schafft and Jared Rice, were Teamwork Champions. 5148C also won the Excellence Award, which is the highest award, presented in the VEX IQ Challenge. This award is presented to a team that exemplifies overall excellence in creating a high quality VEX robotics program. They also finished in third place in the Robot Skills Challenge.

Coming up next:

  • The Gigabots’ next tournament will be Dec. 16 in Rockwall.
  • The Katherine G. Johnson Stem Academy Rock-A-Bots, SGC Cyborgs and GMS Protobots will be competing in the Greenville Ringmaster VEX IQ Event on Dec. 9 in the Sixth Grade Center Gym.
