Dress code survey results & action plan

Dear GISD Staff, Students, Parents & Community Members,

Many thanks to the 1,820 of you who took the time to weigh in on GISD's dress code. Here's a summary of the results:

1,640 people took the time to share their thoughts, with the majority of the respondents strongly suggesting that the current standardized dress code is ineffective. Top reasons cited were:

  • the student desire to express their personalities through their dress
  • difficulty enforcing the dress code; and parents being required to buy two sets of clothes

Those supporting the dress code cited that it makes shopping and getting ready in the morning easier, saves money and levels the playing field.

1,466 people took the time to share their thoughts:

  • Many said dress/attire has little effect on education.

Some said having a dress code had a positive effect on education for the following reasons:

  • It provides structure
  • It gives parents and teachers one less thing to worry about
  • It helps students prepare for the work force where they might be wearing a uniform or subject to a dress code.

Others said having a dress code had a negative effect for the following reasons:

  • Students who don't feel comfortable don't learn as well
  • Teachers are too focused on enforcing the dress code
  • Students need more color options

ACTION PLAN

We've reviewed the results, and we hear you loud & clear!

We have an action plan, both short-term and long-term, that includes changes in the 2018-19 school year. We're working on the details. Look for an announcement before the end of this school year.

Thank you!
