GISD announces Free Dress Mondays & more polo options for 2018-19 school year

Greenville High School students started the week celebrating when they heard some great news from the superintendent:

Next year, all Greenville ISD students (on all campuses) will have Free Dress Mondays! AND students will be able to wear solid polo shirts in any color the other days of the week, along with the other dress items specified in the current student dress code.

The decision came after 1,820 students, parents, staff and community members shared their opinions about GISD's dress code, with 81% wanting a change and 69% favoring a more relaxed dress code within specific guidelines.

Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins held a special assembly to surprise GHS students with the news and to thank members of his Student Advisory Council, who told him GISD's dress code was one of their top issues.

"I took your ideas to the school board, and all of us hear you loud and clear," Dr. Liggins told Greenville High School students during a special assembly.  "Starting next year, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate how you will handle this privilege. So enjoy it, express yourselves, and be smart!"

In addition to giving students Free Dress Monday, Dr. Liggins will convene a committee of students, parents, teachers and administrators to study how dress code affects student success, examine attendance and performance data and make a recommendation to the school board. The committee will meet during the 2018-19 school year.

Free Dress Monday guidelines will be included in the student handbook and parent online registration. In addition, principals will have the authority to announce additional Free Dress Days for students throughout the school year.
