Sparks fly at welding competition

The sparks were flying at Greenville High School on Thursday as students from nine Hunt County schools built grills in a welding competition.

"This is our second year to host the competition," said Agricultural Mechanics teacher Alex Xanthus. "It's a great event because it brings together an entire year's worth of work and puts it in a real-world application. Our students problem solve, adapt and work as a team to build a grill in just four hours."

GHS students took fourth and eighth place. The other schools that participated in the competition were from:

  • Boles
  • Quinlan
  • Commerce
  • Caddo Mills
  • Lone Oak
  • Celeste
  • Bland
  • Wolfe City

Xanthus said he and his students appreciate the support of community members. Donations of tools and metal, including scrap metal, are always appreciated. The students will pick up materials at no charge. If you are interested in making a donation, please email Mr. Xanthus at xanthusa@greenvilleisd.com.
