The power of compassion: Rachel's Challenge spreads climate of kindness

Greenville ISD is spreading the power of compassion across its campuses. Rachel's Challenge kicked off with student assemblies Sept. 21 at Greenville Middle School and Greenville High School. Rachel’s Challenge makes a positive impact on millions of lives each year, and GISD is thrilled to become a part of such a powerful program. The mission of Rachel’s Challenge is awakening individual transformation and promoting safer, more connected schools.

Rachel’s Challenge is making a worldwide impact by turning the story of the tragic death of Rachel Scott at Columbine High School into a mission of change. Rachel’s Challenge is a philosophy of life expressed through strategic, relational programs designed to build better community. Rachel’s Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel’s inspiring story provides a simple, yet powerful example of how small acts can make a big difference.

In addition, GHS and GMS formed Friends of Rachel (FOR) Clubs. Students in the FOR Club will participate in projects to improve school culture and climate. The projects will spread kindness, positivity, and cohesiveness throughout the campuses.

During the assemblies, students not only heard Rachel's story; they also relected on their own challenges and relationships and how they can step up to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion at school and at home.

"Rachel's Challenge is the most powerful intervention I have seen in 40 years of working in education," said Dr. Robert Marzano, a national leader, author and speaker.

Rachel's Challenge is being paid for by a Transformation Grant through the Texas Education Agency. The grant also funded Capturing Kids' Hearts, a training in which more than 200 GISD employees participated this summer. The nationally renowned workshop, designed by the Flippen Group, focuses on how to first establish a relationship and a rapport with students, opening the doors to learning.
