Greenville leaders plan communitywide launch of early literacy app

Early literacy is critical to the success of every child, every school and every community. It affects every aspect of life in Greenville, from creating an educated workforce to inspiring new leaders and lowering the poverty rate.

That's why community leaders gathered on Wednesday to brainstorm about how to best launch Rally Round Reading, a mobile literacy app that would put powerful learning resources into the hands of every child and family in Greenville.

"This is a citywide literacy model that has the potential to have a transformative effect on our community," Greenville ISD Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins said. "Although we are starting with our students, everyone in the community can participate, not just those in our schools."

The mobile literacy app, powered by Footsteps2Brilliance, provides a research-based, high quality, online reading program that offers both English and Spanish stories, games and other resources.

Who has access to the app?

The app is available to anyone in Greenville and can be downloaded through any wifi connection.

The app contains books and games that allow children to enjoy reading and writing. Greenville parents and community members can also download the app and join in the fun.

How can community members get involved?

This summer, GISD students in grades PreK-3 are the first in our community to Rally Round Reading! The next step is to spread access to the app across the community. Community members can help by providing wifi access and learning about and promoting the app.
