GISD Receives Meritorious Budget Award

December 12, 2011

The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) has awarded Greenville ISD its Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for excellence in budget presentation for a second consecutive year. The award is conferred only to school entities that have met or exceeded the Meritorious Budget Award criteria.

To earn this award, the school district submitted its 2011/2012 budget for a rigorous review based on stringent criteria.

Developed by ASBO for school districts, the MBA criteria guide school business officials toward a quality school budget presentation by enhancing the school business officials’ skills in developing, analyzing, and presenting a school system budget.

The receipt of the Meritorious Budget Award comes just weeks after GISD was awarded the Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) Award of Merit for Purchasing and Operations. The TASBO award is provided to school districts that are committed to following professional standards in the acquisition of goods and services.

The acquisition of these two awards exemplifies Greenville ISD’s commitment to financial prudence and responsibility to the community’s tax dollars.

During the 2011-12 budget process, GISD implemented budget reductions exceeding $1,000,000. These reductions helped GISD meet state funding cuts without necessitating teacher lay-offs or furlough days.

Due to a combination of factors implemented by the district over the past three years including budget reductions, staff reductions through attrition and increased attendance, GISD was able to add over $4,000,000 to its general operating fund balance. From a five year financial outlook, this will help GISD maintain its financial solvency with the anticipated multi-billion state budget deficits, additional state funding reductions and increased operational costs on the horizon.
