Congratulations to New Horizons High School history teacher Millie Edwards, who was chosen to receive a full master's degree scholarship to Texas A&M-Commerce.

"It's awesome. It's a dream come true," Edwards said. "When you think you've reached your peak and all of the sudden, an opportunity comes along that allows you to fulfill a lifelong dream, it's just undescribable."

Edwards said she is interested in pursuing a master's degree in school leadership and curriculum. She has taught a total of 22 years in GISD, 12 at Greenville High School and 10 at New Horizons High School.

The scholarship is one of the many benefits Greenville ISD enjoys, thanks to its growing partnership with Texas A&M-Commerce.

Under the Forever A Lion and Greenville Pledge agreements, both students and staff are able to enroll at the university for free or at a discounted rate.

"The leaders at Texas A&M-Commerce and Greenville ISD are dreaming big for our students and our teachers,” GISD Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins said. “We all know the lifelong benefits of a college degree. We are forging a pathway for our students and staff to obtain degrees at no cost or at a very reasonable cost."

The Greenville Pledge program ensures that students whose parents qualify – typically with an annual household income of less than $50,000 – will have their tuition covered by a combination of federal and local aid, Texas A&M-Commerce officials said.

"I just think the most important job anyone can do is what we do every day for our students," Edwards said.
