GISD Superintendent gets Convocation surprise!

Loud horns started blaring outside just as GISD Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins was wrapping up this year's virtual Convocation program with his staff members at the administration building.

He rushed outside to investigate and found cars and trucks circling the block, filled with employees from every campus and department in an outpouring of appreciation for his leadership.

"I didn't know what was happening at first, then I saw all the signs and banners saying thanks, and I couldn't believe what was happening," he said. "Our teachers and employees never cease to amaze me. I am overwhelmed with joy and gratitude."

This year, in the interest of safety, GISD employees watched a prerecorded convocation program in small, socially distanced groups rather than in an auditorium. The theme of this year's Convocation was "We Are GISD," and it celebrated unique campus traditions and thanked all employees for the contributions they make to serve our students.

During the surprise parade, a charter bus that was recently donated to GISD and decorated with a "Nothing Stops a Lion" wrap made its debut. The charter bus may have a lot of miles on it, but it was looking sharp!

"That was a highlight for me -- seeing that bus come around the corner," he said. "That's the first time I've seen it with the new wrap. You really have to see it in person."

Dr. Liggins has long been known for his gift for making others feel appreciated. Today, it felt good to let him know the feeling is mutual!
