When COVID restrictions create a challenge, Altrusa of Greenville gets creative.

For the last 14 years, Altrusa of Greenville has encouraged literacy through its annual Reading Rodeo, sending guest readers to campuses and giving students books to take home.

Rather than downsizing because of COVID-19 restrictions, Altrusa of Greenville President Melva Hill decided to make this year's event even bigger.

This year's Reading Rodeo is being celebrated on all elementary campuses, plus L.P. Waters Early Childhood Learning Center, by playing videos of dozens of guest readers. Also, all 2,600 PreK-5 students are getting even more books - 7,800 total - to take home. In

"After experiencing so many occasions when children were overjoyed to receive one book, I got the idea to get them enough to start their own libraries," Hill said. "So this year, each child is getting three books."

Leave it to Altrusans to take a hurdle and turn it into a springboard to do even more for early childhood literacy in Greenville ISD!
