Lions & Lady Lions track teams compete in District 13-5A Championships

The Greenville High School junior varsity track and field teams competed in the District 13-5A Track and Field Championship on Monday, March 29 at Royse City ISD Stadium.

The Lady Lions claimed four district titles in open events as Jasmine Paulin-Rios claimed the discus throw, Se’Niya Reed won the 100 meter dash and the triple jump, and Xariah Phelps took first in the shot put. The Lady Lions finished second in the team standings behind the Highland Park Lady Scots.

The Men’s 4x100 meter relay was the closest race of the day as first, second, and third place was only separated by four one-hundredths of a second. The relay team of Jaqualyn Davis, Degaryion Anderson, Amauryen Nelson, and David Waller would eventually be crowned the district champion.

Anderson would help the Lions finish third in the team standings with his first-place finish in long jump and second place finish in the 100 meter dash.

“We’re in a tough district with several track programs that have historically had really competitive groups,” said Greenville Head Coach Alex Contreras. “I’m really proud of the way our young groups competed today. To win several district championships in different events and to finish second and third in the team standings is a testament to our kids and how hard they’ve worked. The future of our program is really, really bright.”
