Greenville’s Varsity Track and Field Teams traveled to Royse City ISD Stadium on March 30-31 to compete in the District 13-5A track and field championships.
The top four finishers in each final event qualified for the District 13 and 14 Area Track and Field Championship Meet in Joshua on Thursday, April 15.
Miles Denson claimed the district title in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes with posted times of 10.57 and 21.77, respectively. Shawn Brown also qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash after posting a preliminary time of 22.50. He would go on to finish third behind Denson and John Rutledge of Dallas Highland Park after running a 22.17.
The Lions 4x100 meter relay team of Brandon Stephens, Brown, Micah Simpson, and Crishon Guster would qualify for the Area Championship after finishing fourth behind West Mesquite, North Forney, and Dallas Highland Park with a time of 43.46.
The men’s 4x200 meter relay team of Guster, Stephens, Brown and Denson ran a blistering 1:28.82 en route to a district title.
The Lady Lion’s 4x200 meter relay team of Andrea Angel, Matiya Simpson, Myriah Barrett, and Deonna Jackson narrowly missed qualifying for the Area Meet after finishing fifth overall.
During the first day of competition, Alyssa Cortez competed in the shot put where she finished third behind Ardreunna Davis of Mesquite Poteet and Deserae Charles of Forney. Cortez’s mark of 32-04.75 was more than two feet better than the fourth place finisher and final qualifier in the event.
“With everything that went on during the season, from bad weather forcing us to reschedule and cancel meets to the restrictions placed on programs across the state due to the pandemic, we’re very fortunate to even have the opportunity to be competing in a district meet,” said Greenville Head Track Coach Alex Contreras. “I’m really proud of all of our kids for the way they represented our school and community over the last two days. We found ourselves in an extremely competitive district and still found a way to have several qualify for the area meet in two weeks.”
The Lion and Lady Lion qualifiers will travel to Owl Stadium in Joshua to participate in the Area Track and Field Meet on Thursday, April 15, 2021.
