Empowering Futures: GISD 18+ Transitions Program Debuts G.R.I.P Program!

The GISD 18+ Transitions program has launched the Growing Resilient Independent People (G.R.I.P) program this school year! The G.R.I.P program is designed to empower our students with essential life skills through various service opportunities and community engagement.

This academic year, our students have been actively involved in several service opportunities, volunteering at various non-profits and businesses in the area. We are proud to highlight these weekly opportunities our students have embraced:

  • HUNT COUNTY SHARED MINISTRIES: Activities include bagging food, preparing snack bags, stocking shelves, and accepting donations.
  • RAFFA CLINIC: Students are involved in assembling mailouts, folding newsletters, stamping, and stuffing envelopes.
  • GLENDA’S CAFE: Students engage in tasks such as clearing tables, refilling drinks, greeting customers and enhancing their social interaction skills.

A project that particularly excites us is the launch of a Community Closet, located at the Houston Education Center (3923 Henry St.).

This unique initiative aims to provide FREE clothing and blankets to families in need. Shopping at the Community Closet will be by appointment only, allowing families to shop for 30 minutes once a month. To make an appointment, please call 903-453-3694 or email boydl@greenvilleisd.com. Our dedicated team will be available to schedule appointments, with calls returned within 24 hours. Shoppers will park on Henry St. and enter through the gate marked with signage for the closet.

Want to be involved? The community closet will be stocked through donations and are still needing some of the following to stock for the upcoming winter months:

  • Coats
  • Socks
  • Shoes
  • Winter clothing
  • Blankets

Donations can be dropped off at the Greenville High School front office. Simply let them know it's for the G.R.I.P program.

The students working with the G.R.I.P program in the store will have opportunities to develop crucial skills such as inventory management, sorting and stocking, retail processes, phone etiquette, appointment scheduling, customer service, and cashier duties. Your support and contributions will not only provide essential items for families in need but also create meaningful learning experiences for our students.

Thank you for supporting the GISD 18+ Transitions Program's journey toward empowering resilient and independent individuals in our community!
