GISD Saddened to Learn about Death of Missing Child

Parents and Guardians,

Greenville ISD was alerted on Saturday, November 3rd that a Greenville High School student was reported missing by her family on the evening of November 2, 2012.  Earlier today we learned from the Greenville Police Department that a body discovered in Van Zandt County yesterday was that of the GISD student.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the student’s family and friends during this tragic time.

When GISD was informed  that the student did not return home after getting off of the school bus, we provided the Greenville Police Department with the video tape from the high school and the bus, showing that the student got on the bus at the high school and got off of the bus safely at her stop. Please know we have not received any notice and do not have any evidence of predators near our schools or buses. That being said, it is paramount that we remember to stay alert for any strange or suspicious person around our schools and buses. Please remind your children to be vigilant as they go to and from school. Our bus drivers are highly trained to stay alert and constantly scan their surroundings.

Counselors and staff will be on hand to speak with and comfort any students in need. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kelli Tharp, Director of Community Services, at tharpkl@greenvilleisd.com or 903-457-2521.

Most sincerely,

Don Jefferies, Superintendent
