Greenville Early College High School teacher Joel Pitts has been named the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) Chapter 416 Northeast Texas Teacher of the Year, recognizing his outstanding contributions to STEM education and his impact on students in the classroom and beyond.
The award honors educators who demonstrate exceptional performance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) while inspiring the next generation of innovators. Pitts was selected for his commitment to providing meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that challenge students to think critically and collaborate.
Within the Early College program, Pitts teaches a variety of courses, including engineering, where students are given opportunities to apply real-world problem-solving skills. He is also the head sponsor of the globally recognized Iron Lions Solar Car Team, which recently competed in Australia as the only high school team in the world participating in the event.
Through his work, Pitts has created an environment where students are encouraged to explore, innovate, and push beyond their limits.
“I am so proud of each of the students I teach,” Pitts said. “Each one brings a unique perspective to their engineering projects, making them both thoughtful and innovative.”
His impact in the classroom is felt across campus, where students are drawn to the engaging and challenging experiences he provides.
“Mr. Pitts is an incredible teacher and so deserving of this award,” said Dr. Rebekah Russler, Chancellor of Greenville Early College High School. “He brings engineering to life by providing his students with hands-on, challenging activities that push them to problem solve and collaborate. Our students love his classes because he makes learning engaging and enjoyable. He creates the kind of learning experiences he would have wanted as a student, and they thrive because of it.”
As the Chapter 416 recipient, Pitts will be recognized at a regional awards event this spring and is eligible for consideration at the state and national levels. The AFA Teacher of the Year program highlights educators who are shaping the future through STEM instruction and recognizes their dedication to student success.
Pitts’ recognition also marks continued excellence for Greenville ECHS, as this is the second year a teacher from the program has received the honor, following Ms. Taylor Lulashnyk (Kline) in 2024.
Through educators like Pitts, Greenville ISD continues to provide students with opportunities to explore innovative pathways and prepare for future careers, reinforcing the district’s commitment to excellence in education.
