Winter Weather and GISD Closing/Delay Protocols

Staff and Parents,

When determining school closings and/or school delays, GISD staff follows prescribed and comprehensive protocol. Adhering to these practices, administrators began monitoring weather and road conditions in Greenville and Hunt County on Monday evening. At 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, GISD staff drove local roads to check conditions and drivability. Based upon weather updates and clear road conditions at that time, buses were deployed at 5:45 a.m. At that point, it looked like the weather problems were only going to be West and South of us.  Obviously, this turned out to be incorrect.  When the winter weather began at 7:00 a.m., GISD buses had already begun completing their routes and students were under GISD care. At that time, it was too late to issue a delayed start. Our neighboring school districts faced the same challenges and did not delay or cancel school either.

Please know that no tardies were issued on Tuesday. Likewise, any student arriving to school prior to 12:00 p.m. was not counted absent. Furthermore, all weather-related absences will be excused.

A decision about the district’s start time tomorrow will be made later this afternoon or early this evening. Notices will be sent out via school messenger, posted to the GISD website and Facebook page and disseminated to all local radio and TV stations.

As always, if you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks, Don Jefferies, Superintendent
