Teachers have received thousands of free items - ranging from finger paints and sharpie markers to bulletin boards - from the Teacher's Supply Closet this year!
Thanks to our amazing volunteers and generous donors, GISD has a unique clearinghouse for the distribution of donations to teachers.
"I was a teacher for 30 years at Carver, and I know how much I spent on school supplies for my students - a lot!" said Teacher Supply Closet Volunteer and Co-Director Jan Teeters. "Now, as a retired teacher, it means so much to me when teachers come by to pick up their donated items. Their eyes just light up, and they can't believe it's free."
Teeters and fellow volunteer and Co-Director Renda Loftin have generously volunteered their time and skills to run the Teacher Supply Closet, which is located at the PRIDE Center in the Houston Education Center.
"Renda keeps everything very well organized and stocked, I keep track of everything that's donated and that goes out to teachers in an inventory sheet that I share with staff. We have volunteers who help with deliveries and odds and ends. Of course, none of this would be possible without our donors. We've even had people make donations in people's names as birthday gifts. It has come together beautifully."
This year, the Teacher's Supply Closet is celebrating its third year in GISD. In addition to supplies, there is a teacher workroom with a poster maker, laminator, Cricut, copier and collection of die cuts ready for teachers to use.
"God bless your work. You make our classrooms work better," Lamar life skills teacher Harry Jackman wrote after he received his supplies.
