Here are the highlights from the May 17, 2022, School Board meeting:

  • The meeting opened with the call to order at 5:30 p.m. with a quorum present. The invocation was led by Pastor Jimmy Tsai of One Church, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and presentation of colors by the GHS NJROTC.

Recognition

  • Recognition of Greenville High School Robowranglers
  • Recognition of Art Around Town students
  • GISD honored 10 area businesses for hosting Art Around Town.
  • Recognition of three New Horizons High School students for receiving scholarships funded by Altrusa of Greenville and the Daybreak Rotary club
  • Interim Chief of Teaching and Learning Dr. Laurie Hitzelberger was given the Extra Mile award for her leadership and for making a difference across the district.
  • School Board Vice President Roger Livingston awarded the Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members Teacher of the Year Award to GMS teacher Tyler Carthers.
  • GISD's Campus and District Teachers of the Year for the 2022-23 school year were honored.
  • GHS Head Baseball Coach Jeromy Slagle was honored as the May Hero of Hope.
  • GISD Police Chief Ramon Rodriguez expressed his gratitude to the two GHS students who came forward with information that helped law enforcement authorities with the investigation.       

Comments from Individual Board Members

  • Trustee Bonnie-Jean Stewart congratulated all the students and staff who were recognized this evening, along with Early College High School graduates, Floor Show performers and the NJROTC.
  • School Board President Trena Stafford said she is looking forward to the Pops Concert, which is coming up Friday at GHS.

Swearing in of Trustees & Oath of Office

  • District 1 Trustee Anne Haynes, District 3 Trustee Bonnie-Jean Stewart and District 6 Trustee Aletha Kruse were sworn into office and took the oath of office.

Reorganization of the Board

  • Superintendent Sharon Boothe was elected President Pro Tem.
  • Trena Stafford was elected President.
  • Roger Livingston was elected Vice President.
  • Tish Woodruff was elected Secretary.

Open Forum and Public Comment for Agenda Items & Non-Agenda Items

  • Matthew Middleton expressed his disappointment that the bond issue did not pass. He expressed an interest in helping the ag program.
  • Mitzi Money spoke about her concerns regarding reading material in Texas public school libraries, including those in GISD.   

Reports / Discussion Items

  • Superintendent's Report: Superintendent Boothe highlighted how dollars make a difference for kids.
  • Child Nutrition Director Sharee Osten presented an update on food service.
  • The Board approved the purchase of cafeteria equipment to replace serving lines for GMS, T6 and Crockett Elementary.
  • Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance Sherry Dodson presented the quarterly financial report and the second reading of the 2022-23 budget.

Action and Discussion Items - the board approved the following:

  • SHAC recommendation regarding seventh and eighth grade health curriculum
  • Update to the 2022-23 school calendar to accommodate a newly released testing date by the TEA
  • Purchase of a district-wide intrusion and monitoring system
  • Purchase of an intercom system for Carver, Lamar and Crockett Elementary Schools
  • Purchase of materials to paint the main entryways at Carver and Lamar Elementary
  • Purchase of a truck for the Ag program
  • TASB Board of Directors nominations
  • TASB 2022-24 Advocacy Resolution
