Here are the highlights from the Sept. 22, 2022 School Board meeting:

The meeting opened with a call to order by President Aletha Kruse at 5:30 p.m. with a quorum present. A pastor delivered the invocation, and President Kruse led the pledge of allegiance.

Reading of Vision Statement

Greenville High School senior Bentley Love read the GISD Vision Statement and described his experience as a student in GISD, including leadership training through FFA and an internship with the GISD Communications Department. Bentley wants to own his own radio station one day, and he says these experiences have helped prepare him for that goal.

Recognition

  • Recognition of the GHS FFA students who earned Lonestar degrees
  • Recognition of the Iron Lions solar car team
  • Recognition of Mari Wilcock, National Merit Scholar semi-finalist
  • Recognition of GHS Key Club Presidential Award recipients
  • Recognition of GISD Impactful Partner Latson's and representative Chasen Carpenter
  • Recognition of the GISD Hero of Hope GMS math teacher Dr. Bobb Mahrer

GISD School Board Carver High School Proclamation

President Kruse read the following proclamation, which was unanimously approved by trustees:

WHEREAS, Carver High School, which was founded in 1951, represents an important part of the history of our community and of Greenville Independent School District, and

WHEREAS, The Board of Trustees deeply believes in honoring the legacy of Carver High School, which was located in the building that is now L.P. Waters Early Childhood Educational Center, and

WHEREAS, Important achievements of Carver High School students, including an impressive varsity football record of 104-54 and other notable accomplishments, will be preserved, along with important trophies and other items reflecting the history of the school, and

NOW, THEREFORE, We, the Greenville ISD Board of Trustees, do hereby express our dedication to preserving the legacy of Carver High School and the history it represents.

Comments from Individual Board Members

  • Trustee Bonnie-Jean Stewart congratulated the students on their achievements.
  • President Aletha Kruse congratulated Dr. Bobb Mahrer on being a deserving recipient of the Hero of Hope honor.
  • Trustee Tish Woodruff also congratulated Dr. Mahrer and commented that he was her son's favorite teacher.

Reports/Discussion Items

  • The Board voted to reconvene the Board Operating Committee.
  • The Board approved class size waivers for eight classrooms that surpassed the 24-1 student-teacher ratio at the elementary level. The waivers were for:
    • one fourth-grade bilingual class at Bowie Elementary
    • one first-grade class at Carver Elementary
    • four kindergarten classes at Lamar Elementary
    • two third-grade classes at Lamar Elementary
  • The Board approved a purchase over $50,000 for Unemployment Insurance ($92,700)
  • The Board approved a purchase over $50,000 for Communities in Schools ($270,000)
  • The Board approved the appointment of Deputy Superintendent of Administration Wes Underwood as Executive Director of Head Start.
