Here are the highlights from the Nov. 15, 2022 School Board meeting:

The meeting opened with a call to order by President Aletha Kruse at 5:30 p.m. with a quorum present.

Crestview Christian Church Pastor Phillip Dukes delivered the invocation, the GHS NJROTC presented the colors and President Kruse led the pledge of allegiance.

Reading of Vision Statement

  • Crockett/STEM fifth grader Aiden Carroll 

Recognition 

  • Extra Mile recipients: Teacher's Supply Closet Co-Directors Jan Teeters and Renda Loftin were honored for launching and running the TSC, which is celebrating its third year. 
  • Impactful Partner: Brookshire's Grocery and Pharmacy was honored for donating food, water and other items for district events and also for employing GISD students and graduates.
  • Hero of Hope: Bowie Elementary music teacher Layne Russell was honored as the November 2022 Hero of Hope.

Open Forum (non-agenda related items)

  • Teresa Walker commented on her concerns she had while working as a substitute teacher.

Comments from Individual Board Members

  • Trustee Bonnie-Jean Stewart congratulated those who were recognized and also expressed her appreciation for Friday's Veterans Day program.
  • Trustee Trena Stafford expressed how disheartened she was that the bond issue did not pass Nov. 8.
  • Vice President Roger Livingston said he'd enjoyed riding several school bus routes with students and encouraged other trustees to do the same.

Reports/Discussion Items

  • Superintendent's Report: Superintendent Sharon Boothe gave highlights of news and events from around the district.
  • Teaching and Learning: Executive Director of School Improvement Stephanie Hensley presented a summative data report.
  • School Leadership and Student Support: Deputy Superintendent Wes Underwood presented a report regarding student discipline.
  • Exploration of alternate calendar for 2023-24: Superintendent Boothe presented an option for the 2023-24 school year that would introduce a 4.5-day week. The board authorized the district to conduct a survey to gather feedback from teachers.

Finance 

  • Delinquent tax update: Representatives from Linebarger Attorneys at Law presented a report regarding delinquent property tax collection on behalf of GISD.
  • FIRST report card: Deputy Superintendent Wes Underwood presented the FIRST report. GISD earned a Superior rating.


Action and Discussion Items

  • Grading policy: Assistant Superintendent of Operations Dr. Greg Anderson presented a review of policies related to grading, including (LOCAL) EIA, EIC, and EIE / (LEGAL) EIA, EIC, and EIE(Goal 1: Teaching and Learning)
  • Canvassing: The Board reviewed and approved the Nov. 8 election results.
