Here are the highlights from the Jan. 17, 2023 School Board meeting:

The meeting opened with a call to order by President Aletha Kruse at 5:30 p.m. with a quorum present. The GHS NJROTC presented the colors. 

Oasis Church Pastor Josh Yotter delivered the invocation.

Reading of Vision Statement

  • Sixth-grader Ryleigh Nicholson read the vision statement and shared her dream of becoming a veterinarian with the School Board.  

Recognition

  • School Board Recognition: Trustees were honored for the many hours of time they devote to serving GISD's students, staff and community. 
  • Extra Mile:
    • GISD bus driver Richard Sasek was honored for cheering on sixth graders during a recent robotics competition and providing them with safe transportation home during severe weather.
    • Maintenance supervisors Dennis Russell and Vic Lawson were honored for their fast and thorough work during the winter storm that froze pipes over the recent Christmas break.
  • Impactful Partners:
    • Atrusa Greenville, for the many ways the organization supports early childhood literacy, Hunt County Kids and other projects that benefit Greenville students and families
    • Charter Plumbing, for exceptional response to plumbing needs during the winter storm that froze pipes over the recent break

Open Forum and Public Comment

  • George Kroncke spoke regarding the 2023-24 calendar.
  • Joel Pitts spoke regarding the 2023-24 academic calendar.
  • James Evans spoke regarding the 2023-24 academic calendar.
  • Kenneth Freeman spoke regarding student conduct on school buses.

Comments from Individual Board Members

  • Trustee Bonnie-Jean Stewart congratulated all those who were recognized. She also expressed her appreciation for the student notes, artwork and small gifts from the campuses.
  • Trustee Anne Haynes said the principals' words of appreciation were very meaningful to her.
  • Trustee Mike Rackley commented on the delicious dinner prepared by the culinary arts students. He also praised the culinary arts students for the successful opening of the Lions Lair Cafe.
  • President Aletha Kruse expressed her appreciation for the outpouring from students and staff. She added how much she enjoys serving on the board and appreciates the other trustees.

Reports/Discussion Items

  • Superintendent's Report: Superintendent Sharon Boothe gave highlights of news and events from around the district.
  • Maintenance and Operations: Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance and Operations Dr. Greg Anderson presented an update to Board Policy 120, which was approved by the Board.
  • Finance: Superintendent Boothe presented the quarterly budget report.

Governance

  • Donation: The Board approved a $20,000 donation for improvements to the batting cages, which will benefit baseball and softball players. The donation was from several citizens, including Juan Martinez and Terry Driggers, who represented the group at the meeting. 
  • Calendar: The Board approved an amended calendar (Option C) for the 2023-24 school year.

  • Adding Superintendent Sharon Boothe to have access to all online financial accounts as well as to authorization access to all GISD Financial Accounts. (Alliance Bank, American National Bank, Lone Star Bank, TD Ameritrade Bank)
