Here are the highlights from the October 10, 2023, school board meeting:  

The meeting opened with a call to order by President Aletha Kruse at 5:30 p.m. with a quorum present. Pastor Joseph Lawson from Wesley Chapel CME Church led the invocation and the GHS NJROTC presented the colors.   

Presentation of the GISD Vision Statement by KGJ STEM @ Crockett 4th grader Jaxon Anderson. 

Recognition 

  • Recognition of GISD Principals for Principal Appreciation Month 

Open Forum and Public Comment for Agenda Items  

  • There were no comments from the public. 

Open Forum and Public Comment for Non-Agenda Items  

  • Lori Butler spoke about concerns she has with the Flaming Flashes and the misinformation about when the drill team was originally formed. 
  • Bettye Mondy spoke about wanting to see pep rallies at Greenville High School every week, not just on the home games. She also expressed her opinion on the need for the bond to pass on November 7. 

Comments from Individual Board Members  

  • Bonnie-Jean Stewart said thank you to all the principals for everything they do for the students of GISD. 
  • Tish Woodruff asked to get more information about the Flaming Flashes. 
  • Anne Haynes expressed her gratitude to the principals for the work they do every day. 
  • Aletha Kruse read through a list of reasons the November 7 bond election is so important and encouraged everyone to get out and vote. 

Reports/Discussion Items  

  • Principal Melissa Yost gave a presentation on the Hunt County Head Start Cost Allocation Plan. The board voted 7-0 to approve the plan. 
  • Stephanie Hensley gave a report on the district’s monthly academic progress from skills checks and unit assessments.  
  • Wes Underwood and principals from several campuses gave a progress report on discipline, effective schools framework grant, teacher feedback/walk-throughs and high-quality instructional materials. 

Action and Discussion Items  

  • Consider Approval of Purchase over $50,000 - Insight Education Group, Inc. (no more than $371,750). The board voted 7-0 to approve the purchase. 
  • Discuss and consider approval of the purchase of metal detectors at Greenville High School. The board voted 6-1 to table this item until the next budget process. 
  • Consider Acceptance of Super Teacher Donation CDC (LOCAL) – Linebarger The board voted 7-0 to accept the donation of $2500. 
  • Consider Acceptance of Donation to GHS Basketball CDC (LOCAL) - ReMax Four Corners Real Estate The board voted 7-0 to accept the donation of $1000. 
  • Consider Acceptance of Donation to GHS Softball - CDC (LOCAL) - Community Support The board voted 7-0 to accept the donation of $10,000 to be applied towards a batting cage.

The board voted (7-0) to approve the following items on the consent agenda:

  • Board Minutes for September 19, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. - Regular Board Meeting 
  • Board Minutes for October 2, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. - Called Board Meeting 

Closed Session – The board entered into closed session at 7:17 p.m.  

  • Consider Approval of Professional New Hires and Ratification of Employment Contracts as Recommended
