Here are the highlights from the February 20, 2024, school board meeting: 

  

The meeting opened with a call to order by President Aletha Kruse at 5:30 p.m. with a quorum present. Pastor Chris Yost, Wesley United Methodist Church, led the invocation, and the GHS NJROTC presented the colors.    

 

Presentation of the GISD Vision Statement by Greenville High School Senior Sebastian Gonzalez.

Open Forum and Public Comment for Agenda Items   

• There were no comments from the public on agenda items.

 

Open Forum and Public Comment for Non-Agenda Items   

• Chie Wilcock spoke to the board of trustees about the importance of the Suzuki Strings program and expressing her desire to bring the program back to Greenville ISD.

 

Comments from Individual Board Members    

• Roger Livingston spoke about attending several local community events, campus programs and the Special Olympics events in Van Alstyne. He is very proud of this community and school district and said there are so many great things happening.
• Anji Taylor spoke about attending the meeting held by Coach Collins for athletes and parents and is very excited to see where our athletic programs are headed.
• President Kruse read a prepared speech about the roles of board members and a few misconceptions that she has heard in the public lately.

 

Closed Session – The board entered into closed session at 5:51 p.m.

 

Action on closed session items:

• Action following grievance heard during closed session. The board will give notice of their decision in writing prior to the next board meeting.
• The board voted 7-0 to approve new hire list.

 

Public hearing on Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR)

• Interim Superintendent Dr. Laurie Hitzelberger gave an update on some outstanding GISD students & programs.

• Chief Finance Officer Coy Martin gave the Quarterly Financial Report, ESSER Report and the Maintenance Tax Note (MTN) Report. The board voted 7-0 to approve as presented. You can view the presentation here.

Maintenance and Operations

• Consider Approval of Policy GKG (Local) - Community Relations School Volunteer Program. The board voted 7-0 to approve as presented. You can view the presentation here.
• Resolution of the Board to Employ or Accept as Volunteers Chaplains according to SB 763. Three options were presented. A motion was made to approve option 3. The board voted 3-4, so the motion failed. A further vote was tabled for the board to get more information.   You can view the presentation here.

 

Action and Discussion Items   

• Consider approval of the purchase of furniture over $75,000 from the Maintenance Tax Note budget. The board voted 7-0 to approve as presented.
• Acceptance of donation from the amount of $300 to Early College High School from the Greenville Elks Lodge. The board voted 7-0 to approve as presented.
